An electronic workflow management system is a software application that allows a company to define and execute workflows based on business rules. It can automate business processes and is often customized to the needs of a specific organization. The software allows users to control and customize every aspect of the workflow process. It provides a comprehensive view of the organisation's processes.

One example of a workflow system is shown in FIG. 4. Its user interface comprises a display 404 and a user interface selection device 406. These devices allow a user to design a workflow using computer-executable components stored on a computer-readable medium. These components include a rendering component, an interface component, a designer component, and a validation component.

Another embodiment of a workflow designer includes a touch screen 436. A user can write or draw a workflow on the screen, and the program converts it into an electronic workflow. The system also supports an inked workflow, which is shown in FIG. 5. A user can also select an option for auto-recognition to generate an inked workflow.

A workflow can be modeled as a series of dependant tasks and activities that result in predictable outcomes. A business process is a set of activities designed to meet the needs of a company and is modeled as a workflow. The user can identify functional components of the workflow and deploy those activities. The activities represent the metadata associated with the workflow process. They have associated properties, handlers, and constraints.
